Founded in 1870, CUNY Hunter College is a senior college of the City University of New York, located on Manhattan's Upper East Side. It was originally known as the Normal College, a teacher training school for young women. Later, it expanded to become a comprehensive coeducational liberal arts and sciences college that offers undergraduate and graduate programs in more than 100 Course Topics.
The 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges", published by U.S. News & World Report, ranked the college 12th among public universities in the north in the "Best Universities-Masters" category.
Hunter College is named after its founder Thomas Hunter, an Irish immigrant. It is organized into four schools:
- The School of Arts and Sciences
- The School of Education
- The School of the Health Professions
- The School of Social Work
The Hawk is the official mascot of Hunter’s sports teams.
